Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 34
In-book reference: Book 2, Hadith 27
Topic: The Four Characteristics of a Hypocrite (Arba'un man kunna fih).
Description:
Is it possible to have "traces" of hypocrisy in our character without even knowing it? In Sahih al-Bukhari 34, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warns that anyone possessing these four traits is a "pure hypocrite," and anyone with one of them has a "characteristic of hypocrisy" until they give it up.
The 4 Traits Explained:
Betraying Trust: Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.
Lying: Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
Breaking Covenants: Whenever he makes a covenant (formal agreement), he proves treacherous.
Evil in Arguments: Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, insulting, and evil manner (Fajara).
The "Fajara" Warning:
The most striking addition in this Hadith is the behavior during a conflict. A true believer remains just and well-mannered even when angry. A hypocrite, however, loses all moral boundaries the moment they get into an argument—using insults, lies, and foul language to "win" the fight.
Key Reflection:
Imam al-Bukhari places this in the Book of Belief to remind us that Iman is not just about what we do in the Masjid; it is about how we treat people when we are under pressure or in a position of trust.
